Online Education Benefits

No matter what your situation, an online education can provide many benefits over a traditional education gained by attending a 'brick and mortar' school. In fact, the benefits are so many and varied that even traditional students are turning to online courses to augment their learning or degree program. If the Internet for you is simply a mechanism for returning to school where you would not otherwise be able to, you are not alone, which is why more and more colleges each year are expanding the list of courses they offer online exclusively.

The following are just some of the benefits you can expect from pursuing an education online rather than attending classes the traditional way:

  • Save Time: Instead of spending hours every month driving to and from the campus, your classroom can be as far away as the power button on your computer. In addition, you will save that wasted time that usually exists between classes in a typical schedule.
  • Save Money: Attending traditional classes brings with it a variety of expenses that can be avoided if you seek your education either primarily or completely online. Savings include:
    • Gas - Instead of driving to classes you can walk.
    • Parking - Instead of paying for expensive permits to park on campus, you park yourself in front of your computer
    • Food - No need to grab that unhealthy slice of pizza while rushing from one class to the next, your fridge has everything you need and it's already paid for
    • Clothes/Backpack - Go ahead… have class in your underwear and carry your books under your arm the 5 feet to your desk. The teacher won't mind.
  • Greater Flexibility: Rather than being locked into a schedule of classes that determine where you have to be and when, with an online education you are free to get educated on a much more flexible schedule. This is due to the nature of an online education which doesn't often include scheduled lectures - rather it is a format consisting of deadlines. Most teachers in online classes will post a schedule at the beginning of the semester of readings and when they are do and postings that you will probably make to an online bulletin board. Some teachers may also require you to attend the rare online chat at certain times (usually in the evenings), but even here, there is flexibility with multiple chat sessions being held to accommodate any schedule.Person typing on a computer keyboard.
  • Eliminate Test Anxiety: For many, test day is a day of dismal worry, fear and stress that can severely diminish academic performance. This is not a failing, as much as it is simply a way of handling the pressure that comes with handling testing under certain situations. If this applies to you, then you should know that many online classes have no testing at all, and those that do are most often designed to be open-book tests that you can take at your own time (before the deadline), and pace. Testing in the comfort of your own living room as opposed to in a classroom with 30 to 300 of your peers can be much less stressful and lead to greater results and higher grades.
